With over 25 faculty members, the History
Department offers more than a hundred undergraduate classes
as well as graduate coursework at the M.A. and Ph.D. levels.
Each semester, several thousand students enroll in our courses
to satisfy their foreign culture, humanities, constitutions,
and other requirements. For those wanting to major or minor
in History, we offer coursework in four areas: Europe, Asia,
Latin America, and the United States.

Students have the opportunity
to learn from faculty trained at many of America's leading universities.
All of our professors enjoy national and even international reputations
in their fields of specialization. Our professors have won more than
25 college and university awards for teaching and research excellence.
The History Department is one of the few departments at UNLV that
is committed to having all of its courses, including those at the
survey-level, taught by our regular faculty. As a result, freshmen
and sophomores can study with the same excellent teachers as our
most advanced graduate students.
Over the past decade, the faculty has worked
with UNLV's administration to secure nearly $1 million in funding
to purchase microfilm and other collections for the Lied Library
to promote student research. These items include an extensive collection
of eighteenth-century pamphlets and newspapers in digital and micro-film
formats, as well as nineteenth and twentieth-century newspapers
and magazines also in microfilm and electronic format, U.S. government
records concerning Indians, the environment, the Cold War, the
West, immigration, race, gender, and other topics in American and
World intellectual and cultural history. Our graduates have gone
on to careers in a wide variety of professions. This website not
only describes careers for history majors, but also includes valuable
information regarding history courses, faculty requirements, assessment,
library resources, and other subjects of interest.
