The Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN)
The Women's Research Institute of Nevada (WRIN) began with
two History Department research projects (see below) and has grown
into a state-wide research institute. A member center of the National
Council for Research on Women, WRIN received NSHE Board of Regents
approval in 1999 and serves as an umbrella institute dedicated to
unifying interdisciplinary research and educational efforts focused
on women and gender.

History graduate students played a significant role in the creation of the institute
and its programs. They continue to have the opportunity to work with WRIN
through graduate assistantships, public history internships, or independent
study. WRIN currently supports three main program areas.
- Histories of Nevada's Women
- The
Las Vegas Women Oral History Project began with three history
department graduate students and Dr. Joanne Goodwin in 1996 to
recover the life stories of women who had worked in the gaming
and entertainment industries. Since then, two more series of interviews
have been added - community builders and pioneers. Approximately
fifty oral histories on women and men in the area have been completed
or are in progress. All will be housed in the Nevada Women's
Archives, Special Collections, Lied Library when the project is
completed.
- The Nevada
Women's Archives opened in 1994 to collect,
preserve, and provide access to primary source materials documenting
women's lives in Southern Nevada. The collection includes
materials of individuals and organizations. Over 200 collections
exist as an identified collection within Special Collections at
Lied Library at UNLV.
- National Education for Women's Leadership (NEW) Leadership
Nevada , a state-wide program to develop civic leaders among
college women, is a collaboration with the Center for American
Women and Politics at Rutgers University.
- Reports on the Status of Women in Nevada provide data
on dozens of indicators measuring the condition of women in health,
education, politics, employment, family status, and more. This
is a collaboration with the Institute for Women's Policy
Research in Washington, D.C. and the Nevada Women's Fund
in Reno, NV.
